This position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located in John Day.
This is a full time, Limited Duration position through October 1, 2024.
We will also consider a Job Rotation for current, regular status employees of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in good standing in a permanent or limited duration position (not temporary or seasonal) that is expected to continue through at least October 1, 2024. What you will do:
- Use rotary screw traps, seining, snorkeling, and electrofishing to locate and collect juvenile salmon from streams throughout Northeast Oregon.
- Operate drift boats and jet sleds.
- Measure lengths and weights of juvenile salmon using a computerized data station.
- Tag juvenile salmon and steelhead with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags and visible implant tags.
- Walk and wade streams to estimate redd and adult steelhead and salmon numbers.
- Sample adult carcasses, measure length, collect scales, determine sex, and assesses egg retention.
- Prepare scales for reading and conducts scale pattern analysis
- Conduct QA/QC of data.
- Enter data into computer databases such as Microsoft Access, PTAGIS, and GIS.
- Manage Microsoft Access, PTAGIS and GIS databases.
- Tabulate, summarize and analyze data in formats suitable for written and oral presentation.
- Prepare reports and makes presentations for professional meetings.

Working Conditions
- This position requires frequent long distance travel to study sites. Considerable travel in all types of weather. Outside work in inclement weather in cold, swift streams.
- Up to 40 percent of time spent in office during normal working hours.
- Must work and communicate effectively with agency staff, other government agencies, private landowners, and members of the public.
- The duties of this position may include the use of a visa card to make work related purchases.
- This position requires a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board. There are some exceptions to this (e.g., Coast Guard Boat Operator License or commercial fishing license). For further information, access the Web site at

- Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours.
Criminal Records/DMV Check

Minimum Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree in Marine Fisheries, Oceanography, Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework; OR
- Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program.

- Collecting and entering data into a central database
- Analyzing, summarizing and communicating the findings of data analyses
- Experience writing progress reports, technical reports or scientific publications
