The position
The position is a senior leadership role responsible for delivering 24/7 control centre services to more than 2GW (and growing) of renewable energy assets throughout Australia. The role will also involve leading the delivery of high value adding services such as energy market services, NER compliance management, bidding strategy to name a few. The incumbent will be responsible for leading a team and will be responsible for budget management with respect to the activities under their control.
Key Accountabilities
- Be an exemplary role model to encourage the avoidance of risk-taking behaviours across the business and provide the personal commitment never to “risk it”.
- Build and maintain a high performing team to deliver a 24/7 control centre service to RES clients, as defined below.
- Support the Business Planning process to ensure robust business performance management and planning.
- Lead and be accountable for the business development of control room and energy market services directly to clients where RES is delivering these services on a standalone basis.
- Develop and maintain client relationships and demonstrate value to the client and seek opportunities to share success with clients.
- Budget ownership of the Control Room service and management of KPI’s to establish progress and against commercial, health & safety and business objectives.
- Guide, mentor, and lead other members of the control room and energy markets team and foster a team identity that is aligned to our corporate culture and values.
- Liaise with the global control centre team to ensure best practice is shared and developed.
- Maintain and or source external services to provide 24/7 oversight and market operator interfaces that are fit for purpose and allow compliance with market instruction.
- Provide operational support to the Support Services team by managing the Projects’ market interface.
- Oversees selection, productivity, and professional development of all CC personnel.
- Develops and implements the CC training and certification requirements, including all regulatory functions required of a Control Centre.
Be accountable for the energy market compliance of the operational assets, in accordance with The National Electricity Rules and associated offtake agreements/ intermediary arrangements the Projects may have in place.
- Detailed comprehension of relevant contractors, off-takers, owners and partners of utility scale renewable energy facilities.
- Identify, investigate and develop new market strategies and processes to obtain maximum revenue from generation in accordance with the market conditions, including but not limited to:
- FCAS charges reduction
- Ancillary market revenue
- Spot market revenue
- Monitor and contribute to regulatory change processes including informing the Support Services team of significant regulatory developments and associated impacts/required actions.
- Manage the communication of project status between AEMO and RES’ 24/7 Control Centre including planned and unplanned outages and the provision of daily handovers summarizing issues/ alerts to be monitored over night and on weekends.
- Manage the registration and license requirements for projects under the RES Agreements, including Green Power accreditation, REC Registry (including REC creation and transfer/selling), jurisdictional licensing applications eg; Essential Services Commission and manage the Australian Electricity Market Operator (AEMO) registration process
- Support the Asset Management team in clear communications and reporting with Owners and offtakers.
- As required interface with the Operations and Maintenance Contractor to respond to market signals and instructions.
- As agreed under the RES contracts, perform back up bidding and project dispatch.
- As agreed under the RES contracts, be fully capable of controlling the projects via the project SCADA, including setting set-points and opening and closing protections if ever required.
- Check the NOS and advise stakeholders of planned outages, facilitate end to end outage planning with local O&M teams and complete all necessary submissions to AEMO.
- Manage the procurement and installation of NEM dispatch management software, and self-forecasting technologies, and ongoing vendor relationship to facilitate necessary upgrades and amendments from time to time as required.
- Coordinate, communicate and comply with Owners, off-takers and transmission provider regarding the grid, production, contractual, regulatory and outage issues.
- Assist the Asset Management Team as required to create regular periodic reports in accordance with the RES contracts, and in-depth analysis of market events.
- Manage, complete or assist with NER compliance reports, with Owners, Site managers and RES Support Service as required.
- Maintain databases of compliance issues as they relate to conformance.
- Maintain databases of project downtimes at the project point of connection, and at each individual generating unit.
- Alert the Support Services team to market events, potential non conformance events, and equipment downtime.
Knowledge
Skills
- Relevant experience of managing electricity generation registrations and license applications in Australia.
- Detailed knowledge of The Australia Energy Market Operator, National Electricity Rules and the Australian Energy Regulator.
- Understanding of state regulators that provide generation licences eg: Essential Service Commission (VIC).
- Knowledge of AEMO’s centrally- coordinated dispatch process and settlements procedure
- for electricity trading
- Experience in energy market operations and compliance, asset management/operations
- Strong working knowledge of NEM wholesale spot market operations including bidding
- Sound knowledge and understanding of relevant Australian and New Zealand electricity market regulations, compliance requirements and regulators
- Experience in implementing and maintaining externally contracted software and service
- Training in risk management, compliance or governance within energy markets is desirable
- Demonstrated ability to maintain close supervision of all facets of the operation and projects and the ability to influence key stakeholders
- Experience in BESS technology is desirable

Experience
Qualifications
- Experience in managing control centre preferably in the renewables and/or power sector this would include management of a 24/7 service
- Knowledge of industry standards and NER regulations
- Knowledge of energy markets and market procedures
- Experience interacting with local utilities
- Compliance and risk management principles
- Team or Business Development specific to the
- A degree in in business / commerce / economics or Engineering (or equivalent)
